History
B.A. Hausa is a programme offered in the Department of Nigerian Languages, Faculty of Humanities, Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano. The programme was mounted in the 2018/2019 academic session under the then Department of Languages as a unit (Hausa Unit). However, in the year 2023 the Department of Languages was split into three Departments among which the Department of Nigerian Languages is one of them. Therefore, B.A Hausa was now under the Department of Nigerian Languages. The programme started with 60 students and five academic staff. So far the programme has made progress by having many more academic and non-academic staff and it owns state-of-the-art teaching learning facilities.
Philosophy
The philosophy behind the idea of having a separate programme for B.A Hausa as a single honour is informed by the necessity to cater for the needs of all those who wish to combine Hausa with other subjects, considering the status the subject enjoys in our society, today as the lingua franca in most of the northern states of Nigeria and Southern part of Niger. In addition to this Hausa is the most widely spread language in West African sub region and second largest spoken in Africa after Swahili.
